A micaceous clay bowl was handmade by Johnny Cruz of San Ildefonso Pueblo. This finely constructed piece features a hand-painted form of Avanyu, a water serpent that some Pueblo people consider to be the guardian of water. Depicted as a horned serpent with lightning emerging from its mouth, the Avanyu is believed to live in the Rio Grande and its tributaries. The creatures body typically looks like a rippling stream, and the lightning coming from its mouth signifies thunderstorms that bring rain. The beautiful coppery peach finish and distinctive shimmer of this piece comes from clay found in northern New Mexico that has a high mica content.

Cruz carries on a rich legacy of traditional methods and techniques from San Ildefonso. Great grandson of the world renowned, Maria and Julian Martinez. He began his training at a young age watching his grandparents Adam and Santana Martinez, and with help from his brothers Francis and Marvin Martinez. Known for his traditional styles, this piece showcases the artist skills and talents. An heirloom piece sure to be cherished for generations to come.

Bowl measures 7-3/4" long and wide, stands 5-3/4" tall. Comes with a certificate of authenticity.
