Alex Tsethlikai Travertine Frog Fetish Carving

Handcrafted by Zuni Pueblo artist Alex Tsethlikai this playful frog is full of character with a wide grin and turquoise and coral accents. Carved from Travertine marble, also known as ;brown onyx, this carving is sure to be a special piece in any collection.

While many tribes and Pueblos of the Southwest are known for making fetishes, but this ancient art form is most closely associated with the Zuni Pueblo, who are considered the most skilled fetish carvers. Traditionally, they depict wolves, bears, mountain lions, eagles, frogs, rabbits, fish, corn maiden, and other animals. The Zuni people believe that the skills and qualities of the animal reside in these fetishes and can bring some of the animals’ power to their keeper.
