The vast, open skies of the American Southwest have always held a profound significance for its Indigenous peoples. Even Acoma Pueblo is known as "Sky City", a community on a mesa west of Albuquerque, New Mexico famously known for their pottery.
This October, that connection becomes brilliantly tangible as the International Balloon Fiesta fills the Albuquerque sky, perfectly coinciding with an extraordinary celebration of Indigenous heritage at the Indian Pueblo Cultural Center (IPCC).
Just as a single bird takes flight, a vision of Morenci turquoise might feature a striking "Birdseye" matrix—a subtle nod to the freedom of the air. Similarly, the clear, boundless blue of Sleeping Beauty turquoise evokes the very canopy under which we live, a canvas that will soon be dotted with hundreds of colorful hot air balloons. For centuries, Native American jewelers have captured this celestial beauty in their craft, using materials seen as gifts from the spirits. They transformed raw stone into intricate designs often featuring our feathered friends, much like the ingenious engineers who transform fabric and fire into majestic flying machines.
From Friday, October 3rd, through Indigenous Peoples’ Day on Monday, October 13th, 2025, the Indian Pueblo Cultural Center is thrilled to host 10 days of special events that beautifully complement the awe-inspiring Balloon Fiesta.
