Carved in Stone: An Ancient Tradition
Since time immemorial, the Pueblo people of the Southwest have carved into stone, etching visual stories and making their mark on the land. Many of these carvings can still be seen today across the Southwest, not only on rock faces but also in early effigy pots and vessels, which were intentionally created for a specific purpose. These carvings have endured throughout time, representing a special place and purpose, and reminding us of those who came before us and the many gifts of Mother Earth. Over time, these carvings have become a celebrated form of Native American art known as carvings and fetishes.
Carving or Fetish? Understanding the Distinction
While all Zuni fetishes are carvings, not all carvings are fetishes. Traditionally, a fetish is a carving of an animal that is believed to hold a special spiritual, supernatural power or purpose. The Zuni believe these figures contain the essence of the animal they represent, offering guidance and protection. While some carvings may be blessed and referred to as fetishes, a true fetish is more than just a decorative object; it is a sacred figure. Carvings, on the other hand, are any representation of a creature, person, or symbol in stone, wood, or antler, created for artistic or decorative purposes.
The Zuni Fetish: A Living Tradition
The Zuni people have long been considered the most skilled fetish carvers, a tradition that dates back centuries as early as A.D. 650. Early Zuni fetishes are called “Ahlashiwe,” which means "stone ancients." These ancient carvings were often created as tools for hunting and healing, and were revered as powerful objects. Modern Zuni carvers continue this legacy, using a wide variety of materials, including turquoise, jet, serpentine, alabaster, lapis, and various types of antler. They create traditional animals, mythological creatures, and even modern figures, each one unique.
The Six Directions and Their Guardians
A core belief in Zuni culture is the reverence for the Six Cardinal Directions, each with its own guardian animal. These animals are frequently represented in Zuni fetishes and are considered to be powerful protectors.
- North: The Mountain Lion is the guardian of the North. Known for its keen eyesight, stealth, and agility, it symbolizes decisiveness and personal power.
- West: The Bear guards the West. Revered for its great strength and healing abilities, the bear represents introspection and wisdom.
- South: The Badger is the guardian of the South. Its tenacity and determined nature symbolize perseverance and resourcefulness.
- East: The Wolf is the guardian of the East. With its strong sense of family and loyalty, the wolf represents family, community, and the spirit of the pack.
- Zenith / Above (the Skies): The Eagle is the guardian of the skies. As it soars high above, it represents a connection to the spiritual realm, vision, and prayer.
- Nadir / Below (the Earth): The Mole is the guardian of the below. Its ability to sense and understand the darkness of the earth symbolizes a deep connection to the land and the mysteries of the underworld.
Many Zuni fetishes are depicted with a "heartline," a carved line or inlaid stone that runs from the mouth to the heart of the animal. The Zuni believe this line represents the breath of life, connecting the creature's spirit to its physical form and giving it power.
