About the Artist
Yellowman is a renowned Navajo artist who has been painting for more than 50 years. He comes from a family of weavers and beadworkers, and has been drawing and painting since he was a child.
He is most known for his moving acrylics and watercolors that celebrate Native beauty and convey a feeling of fierceness and strength. His wife is of Kiowa heritage and his paintings often depict scenes of Plains Indian life in stunning detail and color.
Yellowman is also known for powerful portraits of warriors. In addition to being a distinguished artist, Yellowman is also an active public speaker who speaks on topics related to Native American rights, traditions, history, and art.
For centuries the Pueblo people have created petroglyphs and pictographs, depicting their relationship with the natural world. Fine art painting is a relatively new medium for Native American artists, first practiced in the early 20th century by young Pueblo artists who drew upon their traditions and Euro-American modernist painting. Pueblo painting has become a vibrant and innovative art form that often depicts contemporary subjects and reaches new audiences.Read our Native American Sculpture and Painting Collector's Guide.
