Zuni Pueblo artist Enrike Leekya, carefully handcrafted this beaver fetish from onyx with a fish in hand carved from red spiny oyster shell. Features eyes and nose accents made of jet and mother of pearl.
Fetishes are small carvings that depict animals or other important Native American icons. Many tribes and Pueblos of the Southwest are known for making fetishes, but this ancient art form is most closely associated with the Zuni, who are considered the most skilled fetish carvers.
Enrike is a great-grandson of master carver Leekya Deyuse (1889-1966) and within Enrike's work you see the same stylistic elements of his great-grandfather whose animal figures, necklaces and turquoise figurines are still distinctive among fetish carvings and highly valued works of art.
Beaver measures 2" long and 1" wide, stands 2-3/8" tall. Comes with certificate of authenticity.
